For instance, detecting cancer cells that have sloughed off into the blood, called circulating tumor cells (CTCs), makes it possible to detect cancer at earlier stages than using traditional diagnostic imaging. Because CTCs are them-selves progressing cancer cells, collecting and culturing them can help with select-ing effective treatment options. The reason why this approach is not in common use is because there are very few CTCs in the bloodstream, making it unfeasible to specifically detect CTCs mixed in with various other blood cell components. Our lab is focused on microfluidic devices that use antigen-antibody reactions to selectively capture CTCs, and we are hunting down leads to help improve their performance from a dynamics perspective, through not only cell-based experiments but also numerical simulations and enlarged-model experiments.Developing microfluidic devices to capture rare cellsProduction of useful substances usingthe metabolism of microorganisms拡大模擬実験装置シミュレーション結果一例A wide variety of microorganisms exist on Earth and coexist with humans and animals, yet more than 90% of them remain poorly understood. Many microorganisms play beneficial roles in our daily lives, such as in the production of fermented foods and pharmaceuticals, and they possess immense potential within their microscopic cells. In our laboratory, we focus on the microbial fermentation of plant-derived resources (biomass) to produce energy and chemical compounds that serve as raw materials for plastics. We also investigate intracellular components of microorganisms and the functional properties of fermented tea, a specialty of Toyama. Furthermore, we study microorganisms, plants, and animals as “biocatalysts,” aiming to elucidate their metabolic mechanisms and biochemical reactions. Through this work, we conduct education and research in biotechnology to enable the efficient production of useful substances that contribute to human society. Life Sciences and Bioengineering Assistant Prof. MORIWAKI Maki微生物の代謝を活用した有用物質生産希少細胞捕捉用マイクロ流路デバイスの開発7富山大学工学部で学ぶつよみ
