History

The University of Toyama is an university integrated by 3 national universities; Toyama University (founded in 1949), Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University (founded in 1975) and Takaoka National College (founded in 1983) were integrated by the government in October 2005. This integrated university holds 9 schools, 8 graduate schools, University Laboratory, University Hospital, University Library as well as other educational and research facilities, such as Center for International Education and Research.

Prehistory

1875 Niikawa Prefectural Normal School was founded (The predecessor of the Faculty of Education)
1893 Kyoritsu Toyama Prefectural School (private) was founded (The predecessor of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science)
1923 Toyama High School (prefectural) was founded (The predecessor of the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Science)
1924 Takaoka Commercial High School was founded (The predecessor of the Faculty of Economics)
1944 Toyama Technical Vocational School was founded (The predecessor of the Faculty of Engineering)

Before integration and reorganization

Toyama University

1949 Toyama University was established under the National School Establishment Law (The Faculty of Literature and Science, The Faculty of Education, The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science, The Faculty of Engineering)
1953 The Faculty of Economics was established (Independence from the Faculty of Literature and Science)
1963 The Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established
1965 Radioisotope Laboratory was established
1967 The Graduate School of Engineering was established
1974 The Institute of Natural Medicine was established
1975 The Center for Health Care and Human Sciences was established
1977 The Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Science were established (The Faculty of Literature and Science was reorganized)
1978 The Graduate School of Science was established
1981 Center for Nature Study and Training was established

2001 The Center for Far Eastern Studies was established

Research Center for Low Temperature Quantum Science was established
2004 All National Universities transformed into National University Corporations, and Toyama University was incorporated under the National University Corporation Law

1976 The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established (Transfer from Toyama University)
1978 The Institute of Natural Medicine was established (Transfer from Toyama University)
The Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science was established
Radio-Isotope Research Center was established
1979 The University Hospital was established
1981 The Laboratory Animal Center was established
1982 The Graduate School of Medicine was established
1983 Health Administration Center was established
1984 The Scientific Instrument Center was established
1995 The Molecular Genetics Research Center was established
1997 The name of the Graduate School of Medicine was changed to the Graduate School of Medical Science
2002 The Life Science Research Center was established (The Laboratory Animal Center, the Molecular Genetics Research Center and the Radio-Isotope Research Center was reorganized)
2004 All National Universities transformed into National University Corporations, and Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University was incorporated under the National University Corporation Law
2005 The Life Science Research Center was established (The Life Sciences Research Center and the Scientific Instrument Center were reorganized)

Takaoka National College

1983 Takaoka National College was founded (Department of Industrial Arts, Department of Industrial Information Science)
1986 The college Extension Center was established
1988 The Advanced Course of Regional Industry (one-year, one-subject) was established
1995 The Advanced Courses were reorganized, and were changed to two-years and three-subjects
2000 The department was reorganized with three departments. The Department of Industrial Arts and Crafts, the Department of Industrial Design and the Department of Regional Business Management were established
2001 The Center for Health Care and Human Sciences was established
2004 All National Universities transformed into National University Corporations, and Takaoka National College was incorporated under the National University Corporation Law

2005 Toyama University, Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University and Takaoka National College were integrated and reorganized, and the new university corporation was renamed University of Toyama
Faculty of Art and Design was established
Faculty of Human Development was established (Faculty of Education was reorganized)
Institute of Natural Medicine was established (The Institute of Natural Medicine was reorganized)
Student Support Center, Career Support Center, Admission Center, Community Medical Support Center, Art & Culture Support Center was established
2006 Graduate School of Innovative Life Science, Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Science for Education, and Graduate School of Science and Engineering for Education were established (Graduate School of Medicine Science, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Graduate School of Science and Engineering were integrated and reorganized)
2007 Intellectual Property Office was established

2010 Takaoka College of Arts, Design and Regional Business was closed
